CAN TV Presents King and Gandhi: Unfinished Business on January 19

Chicago’s Community Access News Platform Hosts Special Town Hall Presentation; Brings Together African-American and Indian Communities to Discuss Civil Rights, Equality and Nonviolence

January 19, 2023

CHICAGO, Ill. – January 19, 2023 – CAN TV, Chicago’s premiere hub for community access news, hyperlocal stories and educational resources, proudly presents King and Gandhi: Unfinished Business, a special town hall discussion tonight, January 19 at 7 p.m. on CAN TV19.

Led by CAN TV hosts Sufyan Sohel and Sylvia Snowden, the candid discussion will examine the shared struggle of civil rights by South Asian American and African American communities, commonalities of nonviolent resistance and legacies of leaders Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi, and what can be done in 2023 to continue to push their work forward. Sohel and Snowden will bring both communities together for an honest and important conversation about the legacy of colonialism and imperialism in our society and how communities of color can come together to dismantle these systems.

“CAN TV is committed to providing a space for groundbreaking – and sometimes difficult – discussions in an effort to expose issues we don’t talk about enough as a society,” said Sylvia Snowden, Production Supervisor of CAN TV Signature Programs and host of Political Forum. “In reflection of the recent MLK Jr. Day and Indian Constitution recognition day, we are proud to build bridges for marginalized communities to learn from and uplift one another.”

Esteemed panelists include community leaders Cecille De Mello, executive director at Teamwork Englewood; Soumya Shailendra, Ph.D. candidate at Northwestern University; Priya Shah, founder of The Simple Good and co-founder of the South Asian Solidarity Movement; Pushkar Sharma, founder, executive director of Parallax Policy; and Dr. Aldon Morris, professor emeritus of Sociology & former dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University.
