Recording  a Zoom Meeting

Set up Automatic Record

  1. Log into the zoom account at zoom.us
  2. Go to the Meetings tab
  3. Select Schedule Meeting
  4. Scroll down to “Meeting Options”
  5. Select the “Record the meeting automatically” Option

  1. It will then ask you to choose between recording to your own computer or recording to the cloud.

You can change this setting at any time before you start the actual meeting.

Start Recording During the Meeting

When you are in a meeting there is an option to start/stop/pause recordings on the bottom of the screen. Only hosts or co-hosts can record meetings. It will ask you to choose between recording onto your own computer or to the cloud.

Watch a tutorial from Zoom  here.

Recording to the cloud

When you finish a meeting, you can download the recordings from the zoom.us website (may require a pro account).

  1. Log in to the zoom account at zoom.us
  2. Click on the Recordings tab.
  3. Select the meeting from the list that you want to download

  1. There may be multiple files available for download: A video file, an audio file, and a .txt of the chat.
  2. Hover over each of the files to select download individually, OR select the download button towards the top to download all the files at once.

Depending on the browser you are using, a window may pop up that requests permission from Zoom allowing it to download multiple files at once to your computer.

There is a limited amount of cloud space for zoom accounts. Once everyone who needs the recording has downloaded it, please delete it.

Recording to your computer

When you record locally to your computer, zoom will automatically create a folder with the date and name of the meeting. Once the meeting is over, Zoom will spend some time converting the files and placing them in this folder.

Optimizing your Recording for Editing

Even though Zoom recordings are compressed into an .mp4 file, it won’t be very compatible with most editing programs. There is a setting that will allow you to make it more friendly for your editing software:

  1. Enter a zoom meeting and go to the video settings tab. Access it by hitting the small up arrow in the bottom right corner of the meeting screen.

  1. Select the “Recording” tab, and check the “optimize for 3rd party editor” box.
