Celebrating the Arts on CAN TV

October is Arts and Humanities Month. From dance and performance to painting and sculpture, look no further than CAN TV to find unique performances and perspectives from across Chicago’s arts communities.
The young hosts of “Global Girls” speak their minds and share their artistic endeavors during their call-in show, shown live on CAN TV21 and online each Wednesday this fall at 7:30 p.m. Using photos and videos, the hosts tell how they use the arts to collaborate with girls from across the globe and bridge the divide between cultures.
Shannon Woods, Global Girls’ Managing Director, said they came to CAN TV in part to, “reach thousands of households we may have otherwise not reached.”
Independent artists and organizations regularly come to CAN TV to find new ways to show their work. After taking classes at CAN TV to learn how to create media, Frances Strain started producing her own show “You Can Dance!”
“The more television exposure we received through the show, the more both our staff and the community benefited,” said Strain, whose show is seen every Friday at 10 p.m. on CAN TV19. “We received funding from the City of Chicago for our programs through the exposure on CAN TV.”
CAN TV also captures community arts events that can be seen on TV and online. It provided live coverage of a stage reading of “Shelter/Chicago,” which explores how Chicago’s homeless population is portrayed by the media. And CAN TV featured the Surrealism and War exhibit at the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM), which gave viewers a glimpse of how war veterans express their experiences through art.
CAN TV has been an integral part of the museum’s mission to maintain an active role in the community said Destinee Oitzinger, NVAM’s gallery coordinator, stating, “It is an incredibly important resource not only for us, but for all of the groups and viewers involved to share, grow, and learn from one another.”
